IBOA To Focus On Bank Job Losses

The main focus of a meeting of the IBOA today will be how to deal with significant job losses in the banking sector.

It follows the Finance Union's acceptance of restructuring proposals by Ulster Bank yesterday, which paves the way for 950 redundancies at the bank.

Negotiations at Bank of Ireland and AIB's restructuring plans will also be discussed.

General Secretary of the IBOA, Larry Broderick, says dealing with those staff cuts will top the agenda today:
 
Dublin/Monaghan Bombings Commemoration Today

A ceremony will take place this morning to remember all of those who died in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings in 1974.

This morning, a wreath will be laid at the site of one of the bombs on Talbot Street in the Capital.

It will be followed by mass at the nearby Pro Cathedral to remember the 33 people who died.

Justice for the Forgotten is encouraging members of the public to come along to today's events, marking 38 years since the atrocities.
 
60% Of Firms To Recruit This Year

There's some good news for those in search of employment.

A survey from the business group IBEC has found that 60 per cent of companies plan to hire new staff within the next six months.

The survey of over 550 firms also reveals that one third of companies plan to increase their employees' pay this year.

Director of IBEC, Brendan McGinty, says it's mainly companies in the export sector which will be recruiting new staff:
 
Dentists Warn Of Health Cutbacks

Dentists are warning that the removal of State cover for many dental treatments is leading to many patients leaving tooth decay and gum disease untreated.

The warning comes as the Irish Dental Association meets in Killarney over the next four days for its annual conference.

CEO of the group, Fintan Hourihan, says many of his members are seeing a significant increase in the number of patients needing tooth extractions, as patients are going years without seeing their dentist.

He says the Government must reverse the cutbacks made to the treatments offered, in order to save money for the State in the long term
