An enquiry from a listener to Kildare Today last week regarding the great Paul Doyle sparked an interesting reaction from listeners. Many contacted us to tell us the the great Suncroft player, who won All Ireland medals with Kildare in 1919, 1927 and 1928 died at the young age of 53 and is buried in Carna old cemetery in Suncroft.
Gerry Toft, whose father Con Toft now 90 years of age knew Paul Doyle, came into studio to tell us more. Also, he brought with him the 5 senior Leinster championship medals won by Mick Buckley of Caragh in 1919, 1920, 1927, 1928 and 1929 and one of his three All Ireland medals (1928). The medals are all solid gold.
Well known journalist and author of The History of Kildare GAA and other books, Kildare's Eoghan Corry also joined us to tell us about Paul Doyle.
Gerry, also, brought in the actual football used in the 1927 final. He showed us a photo of Mick Buckley, with two young Kildare supporters, before one of those major finals in the 1920's.
The above mementos were kindly loaned to the programme by the Buckley family. Later in the week, we spoke with Michael Buckley, son of Mick and father of "Nuckser" about his father and those great Lilywhite victories.
We photographed all concerned, including Gerry Toft and journalist and author of the History of Kildare GAA Eoghan Corry.
Separately, Newbridge photographer Pat Tinsley sent us a photo of the late Paul Doyle which hangs in McDonnells (Neeson's) Pub in Newbridge.
