Listen: Kildare Cllr. Resigns From Fine Gael, Citing "Grinding Harassment & Isolation".

: 03/08/2018 - 18:16

Councillor Fiona McLoughlin Healy has announced her resignation from Fine Gael.

In a detailed statement on her Facebook page, Cllr. McLoughlin Healy says she has taken the decision to do so "after over a year of failed attempts to get the party to address, in any meaningful way, a formal complaint about persistent attempts by Fine Gael Party members to silence, harass and undermine me, I have informed the Taoiseach that I am resigning my membership of Fine Gael."

In November, 2016, she made a formal complaint to Fine Gael about the treatment to which she says she was subjected.

She says "The most senior members of the party, including the Taoiseach - Leo Varadkar, Secretary General - Tom Curran, Minister for Equality - Charlie Flanagan, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Party - Martin Heydon, former Director of Elections - Brian Hayes and others in the party, have been aware of the grinding harassment and isolation I experienced as a FG councillor in Kildare. Yet, have failed to address it".

Fine Gael removed the whip from the councillor for a six month period after she lodged a motion of no confidence in then Mayor of Kildare, FG's Bernard Weld. The suspension ended in May, 2017.

In August 2017, the FG Disciplinary Committee confirmed it did not intend to hold hearings in to the complaint, but noted that the "matters raised point to a number of shortcomings.’

Her resignation is effective, immediately. The councillor will continue to represent the Kildare/Newbridge Municipal District as and Independent member of Kildare County Council.

Cllr. McLoughlin Healy also published a video statement, from which this audio is an excerpt.
