Waste water plants serving 50 towns in Ireland failing to meet relevant standards.
That includes the Osberstown Waste Water Treatment plant, which serves areas including Sallins, Clane, Prosperous, Naas, Johnstown, Kill, Newbridge, Kilcullen, Athgarven, Carragh & The Curragh.
A €30 million up-grade of the facility is underway.
A new EPA report shows that, across Ireland, sewage from the equivalent of 120,000 people is entering the water at 44 locations each day.
This has led to poor quality bathing conditions at four locations, including Merrion Strand in Dublin.
Green Party TD for the area Eamon Ryan says people are worried:
The EPA notes, in respect of Osberstown, that "The effluent discharged from the treatment plant met the
relevant effluent quality standards.
However, the collection system failed to meet the Directive’s requirements. This means that some of the waste water is not conveyed to the treatment plant. As all waste water is not treated, the area is deemed to
fail the Directive’s secondary treatment requirements and, where applicable, the more stringent treatment requirements"
