Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has launched a passionate defence of his record in charge of the national team

SOCCER

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has launched a passionate defence of his record in charge of the national team.

The 51 year old is under pressure after last week's 2-1 defeat to Greece which seriously dented Ireland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024.

Speaking to the media, Kenny says he 'is the most successful Irish manager at this time' and has brought 18 players through the system over the last three years.

The Dublin native referenced his record in Europe with Dundalk and says he has made 'brave decisions' and 'good decisions' in the best interests of Irish football.

Courtney Brosnan will go to the Women's World Cup as the Senior Women's International Player of the Year.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper collected the gong at last night's FAI International Awards.

Wolves defender Nathan Collins scooped the Senior Men's International of the Year.

Heather Payne won the first ever Young Women's Player of the Year.

Evan Ferguson was Young Men's Player of the Year.

And Shamrock Rovers striker Rory Gaffney was named SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year.

Scotland had to deal with a 90-minute rain delay before they went on to win 2-0 at home to Georgia in their Euro qualifier last night.

Steve Clarke's side have four wins from four in Group A.

Elsewhere last night, Cristiano Ronaldo scored late to give Portugal a 1-0 win away to Iceland on the night he became the first man to play 200 international games
