White Castle has changed hands several times. However, the financial burden of maintaining a structure built in 1527 has proven daunting
White Castle is widely regarded as the "crown jewel" of Athy.
Its commanding presence offers one of the most picturesque views in the region.
Despite its significance, the future of White Castle remains uncertain, as it is privately owned and has seen "little interest" from local authorities in securing its preservation.
In recent years, White Castle has changed hands several times, with each new owner seemingly captivated by the dream of owning a castle.
However, the financial burden of maintaining a structure built in 1527 has proven daunting.
As the 500th anniversary of the castle's construction approaches, concerns are growing over its preservation.
Local councillors are urging the government to step in and purchase White Castle to ensure its future.
A motion to this effect has been brought up multiple times, with comparisons drawn to similar initiatives, such as the recent acquisition of the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin, which was deemed crucial for preserving the city's historical landscape.
Proponents argue that White Castle is an irreplaceable part of the county's heritage.
Inaction has led to fears that, without intervention, the castle could eventually fall into disrepair beyond the point of saving.
Local voices are calling for a renewed focus on White Castle, urging that it be brought under public ownership to secure its future.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Cllr Mark Leigh said with government grants available for heritage conservation, the opportunity to preserve White Castle is within reach.
Writing in the Kildare Nationalist, Frank Taafe said: "For those interested in working to save the White's Castle, I intend to register Athy’s Civic Trust Company for the purpose of taking ownership, in time, of the town’s-built heritage on behalf of the people of Athy."
He added: "The trust would also apply for charitable status and be in a position to try and obtain state grants allocated for the protection of our built heritage."
