Ireland will soon be reviewed as part of the third cycle of the United Nations’ Universal Periodic Review mechanism
The Free Legal Advice Centre has highlighted inequality and barriers to justice in Ireland at the UN Universal Periodic Review Pre-sessions.
It was among several Irish human rights organisations, each presenting on a particular topic in order to petition states to make recommendations to Ireland on its human rights record.
Ireland will soon be reviewed as part of the third cycle of the United Nations’ Universal Periodic Review mechanism, at the 39th session of the UPR Working Group on 10 November 2021
Ahead of the review, FLAC has issued a series of recommendations, including a "comprehensive, independent review of the civil legal aid system which examines the functions of the Legal Aid Board, its resources, the criteria for legal aid the areas of law covered, and the methods of service delivery."
The ongoing review of Ireland’s equality law must ensure that the legislation and framework for dealing with discrimination complaints are robust enough and meet Ireland’s human rights obligations under international instrument and it says "Ireland must implement UNCERD and UNCRC’s recommendations in relation to the provision of Traveller Accommodation and to ensure adequate safeguards against forced evictions."
FLAC Legal Officer, Christopher Bowes, joined Eoin Beatty on Friday's edition of Kildare Today.
