Overall Garda strength across the district is down two since 2020, falling from 147 to 145, despite repeated recruitment announcements.
An analysis of Garda strength across Athy, Castledermot, Kildare Town, Monasterevin, Newbridge and Rathangan shows stagnant or declining numbers in most areas.
Overall Garda strength across the district is down two since 2020, falling from 147 to 145, despite repeated recruitment announcements.
Since 2021, 37 members of An Garda Síochána have retired in the Kildare/Carlow division.
Kildare South Labour TD Mark Wall said recent announcements of seven new Gardaí for Newbridge and Kildare Town do not reflect population growth, particularly in expanding areas like Kildare Town and Athy.
"We have an entirely stagnant force across many parts of Kildare South, with some areas even facing declining numbers. In Athy, numbers have remained unchanged since 2020 with 34 Gardaí covering a population of over 11,000," he said.
He added: “Kildare Town force numbers are only at 44, down three members compared to 2020 but also down 11 members from its peak in 2022. An additional one member was stationed here according to the recent recruitment announcement, still way off what Kildare needs."
