Less Than Half Of Kildare's Primary School Pupils Receive HSE Dental Care

The Irish Dental Association says more primary aged children are suffering from tooth decay.

Less than half of primary school children in Kildare been seen by a HSE dentist over the past 5 years.

The Irish Dental Association says more primary aged children are suffering from tooth decay, with over 100 thousand children missing out on school screenings last year.

Out of 11,239 2nd, 3rd and 4th year primary school pupils in Kildare, just 5,543 have seen by a HSE dentist.

Screenings in the county are believed to be even lower as the figures include children in West Wicklow.

In Meath, screenings are even lower, with 2,378 pupils out of 10,000 denied a school dental screening appointment last year.

IDA CEO Fintan Hourihan says more dentists are needed to deal with demand and the backlog.
