Alan Kelly Steps Down As Labour Party Leader

Kildare South Senator Mark Wall said that the party was fighting for survival.

Alan Kelly resigned last night after accepting that his parliamentary party no longer had confidence in him.

Poor polling numbers and concerns about the legacy of Labour's time in Government prompted the move.

Kildare South- Senator Mark Wall was one of the party members who, told Mr Kelly he could either resign or face a motion of no confidence, that he would not win.

Duncan Smith and Aodhan O'Riordain have ruled themselves out of the Labour leadership race with both backing Ivana Bacik.

Labour's shortest serving TD looks set to take over from Alan Kelly after his resignation last night.

It's not expected any other member of the parliamentary party will challenge Deputy Bacik for the role.

Labour Senator for Kildare South, Mark Wall spoke with Clem Ryan on Thursday morning's Kildare Today, he said the party needs a change:

Ray Kavanagh is a former General Secretary of the Labour Party, he's horrified and says the move is at odds with the party's grassroots members who voted for Alan Kelly only two years ago:
