The man denies murdering the woman.

A jury has heard how a man accused of murdering a pensioner in Kilkenny fell to his knees in a distressed state when he brought gardaí to the scene of the killing.

Trevor Rowe, of Abbey Street, Kilkenny, denies murdering 71-year-old Anne Butler in her home on Maudlin Street, Kilkenny.

On March 25th 2020, Gardaí received three anonymous phone calls from a male caller, who demanded he be called God.

He claimed to have killed a woman in a house behind a hotel in Kilkenny and threatened to murder another if they didn’t take him seriously.

Gardaí were able to track down Trevor Rowe, who was described as intoxicated and distressed when they entered his apartment on Abbey St in Kilkenny.

According to one Garda, he said, “I murdered her. I done her head in. I slit her throat and I could tell you about five more,” before he lay on the ground and cried.

When Mr Rowe brought gardaí to the door of the Anne Butler’s house, the jury heard he fell to his knees outside and started roaring uncontrollably.

Her body was found lying on her couch. It’s believed she was killed five days beforehand.

Mr Rowe denies murdering her.
