Criticism followed when the Government announced a €9m budget allocation for the pouches last year.

Over two-thirds of schools across the country have opted in to use mobile phone pouches.

There was criticism last year when the Government announced a 9 million euro budget allocation for the pouches in secondary schools.

The idea behind the initiative is that once the phone is in the pouch at the start of the school day, it then cannot be accessed until home time.

Minister for Children Norma Foley says the majority of schools have opted to use the pouches.
