The news came as United were beaten 2-1 by Shamrock Rovers
Shamrock Rovers are nine points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division table after last night's 2-1 win over Drogheda United.
The result came on a day when Drogheda were informed they will not be allowed to compete in the UEFA Conference League, having lost their case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
United are owned by the Trivela Group, who have a stake in Danish club Silkeborg that also qualified for the competition.
Under UEFA's multi-club-ownership rules, two sides with the same majority owner cannot enter the same European competition.
