Comes into effect today
El Salvador is the first country in the world to make Bitcoin legal tender.
A law was passed in the Central American country three months ago - and comes into effect today.
If the experiment is a success other Central and South American nations will follow.
El Salvador continues to use US dollars as the country's official currency.
