Bid to upgrade 200-year-old town-centre building unsuccessful despite council support
There is anger and disappointment in Sallins after the Sunshine Community Club missed out on funding under this year’s Town and Village Renewal Scheme.
An application had been submitted for essential upgrades and ongoing maintenance to the 200-year-old building, which is located in the centre of the town.
The building is used by a number of local groups, including the Sunshine Community Club — a group of more than 50 elderly service users who meet on a bi-weekly basis.
A funding application of more than €500,000 was made to bring the building up to an acceptable standard.
According to Bernie Johnston, secretary of the Sunshine Community Club, the facility requires new windows, improved insulation, upgraded electrics and heating, as well as additional disabled parking. The application was supported by Kildare County Council.
At present, it is the only community centre serving the town.
Members of the Sunshine Community Club met yesterday and were forced to wear coats and jackets indoors due to the cold conditions.

Speaking to Kildare Today earlier, Ms Johnston outlined the group’s frustration at not being awarded any funding:
