A man whose ‘dodgy box’ TV service continued to operate despite his prosecution is free on bail ahead of his sentencing this week.
As reported by the Irish Independent, Ciaran Donovan confessed to operating King Kong Media, a service that incurred losses exceeding €1 million for TV companies and purportedly served 3,500 customers.
Evidence presented by a Sky anti-piracy investigator showcased the ease with which an annual subscription could be renewed for €75, with payments routed to Donovan’s son via PayPal in January.
Despite Donovan's acknowledgment of his involvement, he committed to discontinuing his role in the operation as part of his bail conditions.
He has pleaded guilty to possessing proceeds from criminal activities.
During proceedings at Naas Circuit Court, it was revealed that customers were directed to download the King Kong app through social media platforms and subsequently purchase access codes for TV streaming services on their smart TVs or computers.
