€16 Million Secured For Cycling And Walking Infrastructure In Kildare

The investment forms part of a €360 million national allocation for walking and cycling infrastructure under the National Transport Authority’s Active and Sustainable Transport Programme

€16 million in funding has been secured for walking and cycling infrastructure in Kildare.

As part of a €360 million national allocation under the National Transport Authority's Active and Sustainable Transport Programme, the package includes both major capital projects and Safe Routes to School initiatives to support safer, healthier and more sustainable local travel.

Among the Kildare projects allocated funding for 2026 are:

• Mill Street Active Travel Scheme – €1,700,000
• Celbridge Road Active Travel Scheme – €1,000,000
• Dublin Road Active Travel Scheme – €1,000,000
• Kilcullen Road Active Travel Scheme – €800,000
• Green Lane Active Travel Scheme – €870,000
• Naas to Kill Active Travel Scheme – €525,000
• Dublin Road Naas Connector Active Travel Scheme – €400,000
• Royal Canal Greenway (Maynooth to Leixlip) – €600,000
• Safe Routes to School initiatives in Clane, Newbridge, Leixlip, Prosperous and Rathangan – €710,000 combined
• Bus Stop Enhancement Programme - €500,000

Confirming the announcement, Minister for Further and Higher Education and Fianna Fáil Kildare North TD, James Lawless, said: 

“This is a major investment in sustainable transport for communities across Kildare. Walking and cycling infrastructure make our towns safer, healthier, more accessible and more connected. I am delighted to see projects in Kildare progressing at pace and this funding will ensure they continue to move forward in 2026.”

Minister Lawless added “that the schemes funded would deliver benefits in safety, congestion reduction, connectivity to schools and public transport, and improved quality of life.”

“Parents want safe routes for children to get to school, commuters want alternatives to sitting in traffic, and communities want their towns to work better for people. These investments support all those outcomes while also helping us meet climate and health goals."

Minister Lawless continued “The investment of €62 million in our Greenways network will help deliver key projects all over the country and is another step towards the development of a National Cycle Network. The great news is that over €6.8 million has been allocated to the Grand Canal - Sallins Bridge - Clonkeen (Co. Offaly Border) Greenway Project.

“I want to acknowledge the work of Kildare County Council and the Active Travel Office in progressing such a wide mix of schemes.”
