Funding of €4.2m has been allocated to Kildare County Council to progress works on the Grand Canal Greenway from Sallins to Clonkeen, outside Carbury, on the Offaly border.
The Greenway will follow the canal as it passes through a number of townlands, including Waterstown, Barrettstown, Landenstown, Donore, Goatstown, Downings South, Moods, Mylerstown, Robertstown East, Robertstown West, Lowtown, Derrymullen, Allenwood South, Allenwood Middle, Allenwood North, Killinagh Upper, Killinagh Lower, Ballybrack, Kilpatrick, Ticknevin, Ballyhagan and Clonkeen.
Kildare County Council has also been allocated €200,000 of funding towards engineering supports.
Nationally, €67 million has been announced for Ireland’s greenways.
Kildare South Fine Gael TD and Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon said: “We have seen that greenways are extremely popular where they have been established in other parts of the country, bringing huge economic boosts to the local areas, and we can see the similar benefits that the Barrow Blueway has brought to South Kildare. That this Greenway will connect Kildare to Dublin is an added bonus and will only add to its success."
