Kildare has the second highest rates of breast cancer survival in the country, according to latest figures.
The data provided to Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín for five-year net survival for breast cancer for 2018-2022 show that nationally, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer nationally is 87.3%.
The county-by-county breakdown shows Kildare has a 92.6% survival rate, behind Cavan, at 94.8%.
On the other end of the scale, breast cancer survival rates are much lower in Limerick, at 80.3%, and Kerry at 82.7%.
As reported in both The Irish Examiner and The Irish Independent, concern has been raised by both the Irish Cancer Society and Sinn Féin, who say there is a postcode lottery with cancer treatment.
Referencing figures from July 2025, Irish Cancer Society CEO Averil Power said: “[They] reveal a shocking postcode lottery in Irish cancer care, with where you live determining how quickly you can access lifesaving tests and treatment."
Last November, it was reported that almost 50,000 women could miss out on BreastCheck screening appointments in 2025.
