Between the 22nd and 28th of December a total of 173 people were arrested for driving under the influence - 24 of whom were arrested on suspicion of drug-driving.
Inspector Ross O'Doherty, of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, says each of these offences had the potential to cause accident or injury to others on the road.
Inspector O'Doherty, says in the month of December so far, 76 People have been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving between the hours of 6am and 2pm.
Officers are once again reminding anyone intending to have a drink over the New Year bank holiday to make alternative arrangements to get home and to avoid driving the following morning.
