The highly-rated Sevilla midfielder can now play international football for the Boys in Green.
The ex Bayern Munich youngster, who could also play for Luxembourg or Sweden, was blocked from playing for Ireland by FIFA in 2019.
Johansson lost an appeal against that decision and it seemed he was set to pursue an international career with Sweden.
But FIFA's eligibility rules have now changed and Johansson is set to link up with the Republic of Ireland's under-21 squad for their upcoming camp in Spain.
