Comes into effect today
El Salvador is the first country in the world to make Bitcoin legal tender.
A law was passed in the Central American country three months ago - and comes into effect today.
If the experiment is a success other Central and South American nations will follow.
El Salvador continues to use US dollars as the country's official currency.
Other countries have dabbled in cryptocurrencies, but none has gone so far as El Salvador. Starting Tuesday, all businesses will have to accept payments in Bitcoin, except those lacking the technology to do so, according to a new law. https://t.co/6Qq7cYZaj9
