US: Multiple Rockets Fired At Kabul Airport Intercepted By Missile Defence System.

Whilst an Irish citizen stuck in Afghanistan says he will take any opportunity to make a run for it.

A US official says multiple rockets fired at Kabul airport have been intercepted by a missile defence system.

They've told the Reuters news agency up to five were launched - but it's not clear if they were brought down.

A safe zone around Kabul will be discussed at the United Nations Security Council later, where principles to 'engage' with the Taliban will also be laid out.

Pakistan's national security adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf thinks Western forces risk repeating the mistakes of the 1990s, by abandoning Afghanistan.

It comes as the Taliban says people can leave Afghanistan if they’ve been accepted by other countries.

Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University, Paul Rogers, says it’s impossible to know if they can be trusted.

Officials in the US are investigating reports civilians were among those killed in an airstrike which targeted Islamic State militants in Afghanistan.

Americans hit a vehicle fitted with explosives which they say was carrying suicide bombers.

Their intelligence suggests they were planning to target Kabul airport.

A spokesman for the US Central Command says it's 'unclear' if there were 'additional casualties'.

Elswhere, an Irish citizen stuck in Afghanistan says he will take any opportunity to make a run for it.

Omid Ahmadi, is stuck in Kabul with his wife and two daughters, all of whom are Irish citizens
