In a written response issued today, the Department confirmed that while the Shalom Nursing Home on Church Street had previously been considered as a potential location, it is “no longer under consideration.”
Concerns among residents regarding the future use of Shalom Nursing Home in Kilcock as an accommodation site for people seeking international protection have been addressed, following official clarification from the Department of Equality.
In a written response issued today, the Department confirmed that while the Shalom Nursing Home on Church Street had previously been considered as a potential location, it is “no longer under consideration.”
The possibility of the building being used as an IPAS centre frustrated some locals who were becoming increasingly annoyed over not being consulted or informed of any possible plans in their area.
A protest was held last night, with concerns highlighted around resources and services already at capacity.
The confirmation was issued by the Department’s Community Engagement Team to Fianna Fail Kildare North TD James Lawless and reads: “The Community Engagement Team can confirm that the Department had previously received an offer of potential accommodation for people seeking international protection at Shalom Nursing Home, 16 R148 Church Street, Kilcock, Co. Kildare and the property is no longer under consideration.”
The news comes amid multiple reports by Kfm, that An application had been lodged under Section 5 of planning regulations, seeking exemption from full planning permission to use the building for IPAS accommodation.
The application sought clarification under Class 20F of planning regulations - asking whether the use of the building to accommodate International Protection Applicants qualifies as exempt from full planning permission.
A Class 20F declaration covers use-change for up to 5 years, under planning exemptions.
Any building works beyond internal reconfiguration (e.g. structural works) may still require full planning permission.
