It comes as the current Chief, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy is due to leave his post to take up a job in the EU this summer.
The appointment of a new Chief of Staff for the Defence Forces has moved a step closer.
Cabinet today accepted the Tánaiste's recommendation of Brigadier General Rossa Mulcahy originally from Newbridge, who is currently Assistant Chief of Staff.
The Government's nomination is for appointment by the President.
