It follows today's MD meeting
Fianna Fail Cllr. Noel Heavey has announced he is stepping down as Mayor of the Kildare-Newbridge MD.
Having been nominated to the role back in July, Cllr. Heavey made the announcement at today's monthly MD meeting.
His replacement will be decided in two weeks.
"We got through a number of tricky things during my Mayorship. I felt that I ran the meetings well and gave people an opportunity to express themselves and I thought I was doing okay but I always knew that the day would come when people said, 'You know, you did say you would share it', so I knew it was always on the cards."
Cllr. Heavey says he's saddened to be leaving the role but he had given Kildare County Council an undertaking in July that he would serve as Mayor for a six-month period.
He said it is unlikely that he will reapply for the position but if anyone wanted to propose him he "wouldn't rule it out".
"I've had my go at it and I've done what I've done."
