Concerns have been raised amid ongoing water outages in north Kildare.

It follows water supply issues across the county in recent times, with outages an issue in Allen yesterday (7 October).

Speaking on Kildare Today, Fine Gael TD for Kildare North Joe Neville said the issues have appeared numerous times across areas of the county.

"These are issues that I've raised extensively, we've had a lot of growth in Kildare, but we've had a lot of drain on our water resources, both in Celbridge, Leixlip and Maynooth, but also in Allen as raised yesterday.

"The problem is that when you do works, when you do turn back on the water, often the water then attacks the next weakest point in the pipeline and that's what caused the outage."

Deputy Neville added that the issues happen "all too regularly", especially in Leixlip, and shares the frustrations of local people.

In his capacity as a member of the Infrastructure Committee, as well as the Public Accounts Committee, the Deputy has regular opportunities to raise said issues with Uisce Éireann.

"The population growth in Kildare has gone from about 110,000 at the turn of the century, to 246,000 in the last Census. Ultimately all those houses have had a drag on the infrastructure. Especially with the Allen reservoir, we have seen that drain."

Deputy Neville alluded to certain solutions such as for Clane's water supply to be extended to Prosperous, given the excess water that's available in the town, as well as a new water main supply for the Ballymany area, as much of Allen's water supply gets supplied to Newbridge.

These solutions are being pushed to be added to the Capital Programme, according to Neville.

"Ultimately, repair work in itself isn't good enough, we need capital infrastructure," adding that he's working to ensure Kildare is sufficiently included in new Uisce Éireann funding awarded to them of €12 billion until 2030.
