The consultation is seeking views from workers, employers and other stakeholders on the rules introduced in March 2024, which require employers and employees to follow a Workplace Relations Commission code of practice when dealing with requests for remote or flexible working.
The Government’s public consultation on the right to request remote working is due to close tomorrow at 3pm.
So far, it has had over 6000 responses since the end of November.
The consultation is seeking views from workers, employers and other stakeholders on the rules introduced in March 2024, which require employers and employees to follow a Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) code of practice when dealing with requests for remote or flexible working.
While workers can refer disputes to the WRC, the legislation does not provide a legal right to remote working.
Instead, it sets out how requests must be made, the matters both sides must consider, and the timelines involved.
Kildare South Labour Party TD Mark Wall has criticised the current approach.
He has argued that the lack of a meaningful right to remote working is adding to traffic congestion, longer commutes and pressure on transport networks.
He says thousands of workers are being "forced" to travel into urban centres every day, despite roles that could be carried out remotely, worsening congestion and increasing costs for households.
