Three juveniles arrested as Gardaí investigate incident at Geraldine Park
Over €2,000 worth of damage has been caused during a vandalism incident at Geraldine Park, home to Athy GAA Club.
Seats and sponsor signage in the main stand were damaged, while some chairs were also set on fire.
Speaking to Kfm, Fianna Fáil local councillor and chair of Athy GFC Brian Dooley said those responsible are believed to be a small group aged between 10 and 14.
Cllr. Dooley has described the response of An Garda Síochána as proactive, with three juveniles arrested in recent days.
A Juvenile Liaison Officer has been appointed to handle the case.
Cllr. Dooley said CCTV is now set to be installed across the grounds to help prevent further incidents and “maintain a safe space for members of the club and the community”.
The grounds at Athy GFC is also home to other clubs, including Athy rugby, soccer, tennis and badminton clubs, and is widely used by the public for exercise. A coffee dock has also recently opened on-site.
Cllr Dooley added that increasing activity at the grounds can help deter anti-social behaviour, saying: “The more social activity, the less anti-social activity.”
Meanwhile, Labour TD for Kildare South, Mark Wall, said he is due to meet with senior Gardaí in Athy to discuss ongoing concerns around anti-social behaviour.
He said it is important the community works together to ensure local facilities remain accessible “without disruption”.
