Dentist Accused Of Poor Quality Work & Dishonesty in Northern Ireland Now Working In Kildare

A specialist dentist who has been ordered to work under tight restrictions and supervision over his allegedly shoddy work in Northern Ireland is now reportedly working in Kildare Town

According to the the Irish Independent, Implants surgeon Dr David Gwyer is facing a fitness to practise hearing after being accused by the UK’s General Dental Council (GDC) of failings concerning 16 patients in Northern Ireland between 2016 and 2018.

The allegations not only include failing to provide an adequate standard of care but in some cases that he behaved in a dishonest way and received payments he was not entitled to.

Dr Gwyer, with an address in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, was also declared bankrupt at Belfast’s High Court in April over his failure to comply with a statutory demand by HM Revenue and Customs.

During a hearing last month a GDC interim orders committee extended restrictions first imposed on the dentist in 2018 to last until February 2024, saying it was “satisfied that the order remains necessary to protect the public”.

The long list of restrictions include that he must not provide implants unless closely supervised by a workplace superior nominated by him and approved by the GDC. But Dr Gwyer’s problems in Northern Ireland have not stopped him securing a role as head of the implants team at a clinic in Kildare.

And since 2018 he has been registered with the Dental Council of Ireland which has not imposed any restrictions on his practice.

But the Kildare Dental Centre says Dr Gwyer is voluntarily subjecting himself to the requirements of the GDC order.

On its social media, the Kildare Dental Centre makes no mention of the restrictions imposed on its implants team leader or concerns about his work documented in the GDC case — but highlights his experience and expertise.

It states: “Dr David Gwyer is the head of the implant team at Kildare Dental Centre. Dr Gwyer has many years of experience in implantology.

“He is one of the few dentists in Ireland to have obtained the prestigious MSC in implantology.”
