Director of Green Generation, Billy Costello, told locals he would stop immediately at a public meeting last night
Locals in Kildangan came together to organise a meeting last night in the Cross Keys pub, over concerns regarding the proposal of Green Generation to put large storage containers on the site of the Cush Inn's former car park, without planning permission.
Green Generation uses anaerobic digestion to convert agricultural and food waste to renewable energy, and operates a plant in nearby Nurney.
A number of years ago, the company established a gas injection point where the popular Cush Inn pub was previously located.
However, it has recently emerged that work had begun to put storage containers in the old car park, without planning permission.
Director of the company, Billy Costello, was in attendance at the meeting, and said the containers would hold agricultural and food waste on a temporary basis and would be completely covered in.
However, locals raised a number of issues.
Firstly, they were quick to point out that the company did not have planning permission, did not have a planning exemption and that Kildare County Council has confirmed it considers it to be an unauthorised development.
Locals in Kildangan also expressed concerns relating to the potential smell the containers could emit and the environmental impact, if one of the containers were to leak or burst.
Mr. Costello came under increasing pressure to confirm he would stop working on the site immediately, and follow the correct processes.
Mr. Costello confirmed he would cease work immediately, after being asked a number of times.
It's understood that Kildare County Council's planning and environmental sections are engaging with Green Generation and Mr. Costello gave a commitment that he will co-operate with them fully.
The meeting was well attended, with between 100 and 120 people packing out the Cross Keys pub, while public representatives from different political parties also showed their support.
The community is now in the process of establishing a committee to plan their next steps.
