Kildare County Council has refused to install additional high-visibility warning signs at a crash-prone bridge in Celbridge - blaming the latest collisions on stolen cars being driven at speed.
The issue was raised in a motion by Councillor David Trost (FF), who called for stronger warning measures at the bridge on the exit from the Lucan Road, where he claimed vehicles have struck the structure repeatedly at the same location.
But council officials say further signage is not justified.
In a written response, the local authority confirmed the last two bridge strikes involved stolen vehicles being driven at high speed late at night.
Officials stated there is no evidence that ordinary road users are experiencing difficulty at the four-arm junction or accessing the bridge carriageway.
They say motorists are navigating the area safely.
On that basis, the council has ruled out installing any additional warning signs.
