Kildare is to receive just over €20 million in Department of Transport funding for regional and local roads in 2026.
The largest share - €11.33 million - is going toward new road construction and major improvement works, including continued progress on the Athy Southern Distributor Road, the R407 Sallins Bypass and Osberstown Interchange, and the Newbridge Southern Orbital Relief Route.
Under protection and renewal grants, €2.74 million has been allocated for restoration improvement, restoration maintenance, supplementary works and discretionary funding across the county’s road network.
A further €1.39 million is being provided for strategic regional and local road works - including €500,000 for rehabilitation of the R148, the former N4 route.
Separate drainage works worth €1.29 million have been earmarked to protect roads from flooding and surface damage.
Under the Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience programme, €500,000 will fund projects including drainage upgrades at Friarstown, Lullymore East and Maganey Junction along the River Barrow.
Bridge rehabilitation and inspection works across multiple locations are being funded to the tune of €517,800.
Meanwhile, €413,500 has been allocated for road safety improvements at 17 locations across the county.
Key projects include €50,000 on the R448 between Kilcullen and Castledermot at Knockbounce, €40,000 at Dag Welds Cross on the R403 at Blackwood, and €40,000 on the Prosperous to Allenwood road at Brockagh.
Upgrades are also planned on routes near Leixlip, Maynooth, Rathangan, Carragh, Naas and the Curragh, alongside €38,500 for renewed regulatory road markings at some junctions.
Meanwhile, €517,800 has been allocated for bridge rehabilitation and inspection works, with the largest projects at Spratstown (€103,840) and on the River Road bridge along the R414 (€100,580), alongside works at Walterstown, Porterstown, Green/Lear, Collagelands and Oldmill.
