Intel Announces Job Losses At Leixlip Plant

Up to 195 jobs could be cut at the plant although the final number is expected to be lower.

Intel has notified the Government that up to 195 jobs could be cut at its plant in Leixlip.

The figure was submitted in a collective redundancy notice, though it’s understood to be a worst-case scenario and the final number may be lower.

Intel employs around 4,900 people at the Kildare site.

The move follows global job cut plans announced in April, as the tech giant responded to disappointing financial results and a call by CEO Lip-Bu Tan to streamline operations and refocus the company.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Intel said it is "taking steps to become a leaner, faster and more efficient company".

"We are making these decisions based on careful consideration of what's needed to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work."

Meanwhile, Social Democrats TD for Kildare North issued a statement to Kfm calling on Minister Peter Burke to clarify what actions he is taking regarding the job losses.

“I wrote to the Minister this morning and asked him what are the next steps that his Department and the Industrial Development Agency will be taking to ensure those facing redundancy are provided with adequate supports." he said.

“We must see a full suite of supports provided by Intel and the State – those affected need to be made aware of their rights, entitlements, and any offers of up-skilling or access to further education." the statement continued.

“The Minister should also make clear that these supports, should they be required, will be available and in place immediately – I made this call in April when news of potential redundancies first emerged." said Deputy Farrelly.

Tuesday morning's Kildare Today programme between 9 and 11am will cover the issue in more detail.
