Figures provided to the Green Party show Cork, Meath and Galway built just one shelter each in 2025.
Ten new covers have been provided so far this year, seven of them in Dublin.
Over an eight year period, the National Transport Authority has only managed to add two shelters in Offaly.
Kildare only received two new bus shelters in 2025.
As previously reported by Kfm News, Kildare County Council has previously acknowledged that around 500 bus stops require upgrades, particularly in rural areas where stops often lack shelters, lighting or safe access. The full article can be read here.
Kfm News recently reported on issues at the bus stop located opposite Toughers Business Park.
Bus Driver Sean Conroy described the stop as one of the busiest in the county, serving large numbers of workers travelling daily to and from the Toughers Industrial Estate.
He said it is only a matter of time before an incident happens.
He said people on wheelchairs also face extreme difficulty accessing buses at the stop. The full article can be read here.
Speaking about the bus shelter futures, Deputy O’Gorman said “There has been a complete collapse in the number of bus shelters built nationwide between 2024 and 2025. It’s like the Government has forgotten that, with our weather, people who use the bus need to be protected from the elements."
