Cllr Moore claimed that the Abbey Street closure has effectively turned parts of Naas - including Harbour View and Basin Street - into a 300-metre cul-de-sac, adding that if the single vehicle entrance from Main Street were ever blocked, residents, businesses, and emergency services could be cut off.
Kildare County Council has dismissed claims from Naas Independent Councillor Seamie Moore that there’ve been “complaints” about the road closure between Basin Street and Abbey Street.
Cllr Moore said locals, businesses and even emergency services were being cut off - but the council checked its records and found no complaints at all.
He asked the council - "in light of complaints" made to Residential Groups, the Courts System and Business Area of Harbour View and Basin Street" - to reverse the road closure until a new Harbour Quarter Master Plan is in place.
Officials say not a single piece of correspondence has been received in the past year about the closure.
They added that the move has made the town centre more pedestrian-friendly, with every premises still fully accessible.
