Majority of students to return to schools next week
Two Co. Kildare mothers are calling for a safe return to the country's schools, as the majority of students return to classrooms next week.
Samantha Kenny, is the mother of 3 children with special needs.
Her two sons are on the autism spectrum & her daughter requires around the clock care.
Samatha's son & daughter cannot receive a Covid-19 vaccine as they are aged 9 & 6, respectively.
Ms. Kenny notes her 9 year old son is going back to a classroom of over 20 children, where they will not be required to wear masks as they are under the age of 12.
She notes her worries, as infection numbers continue to rise in the Republic.
Aisling McNiffe's 16 year-old son has been at home for the past 18 months.
Jack was vaccinated against Covid-19 on his 16th birthday in July.
His mother notes he has regressed over the past year & a half, which has affected both his mental & physical health.
Aisling added she does worry about people sharing of changing areas, as her son needs nappy changes throughout the day.
Students in the 16 year-old's school range in age from 5-18 year olds, so not all have access to vaccination.
On the return to school, both Samantha & Aisling note they have not received specific information about back to school protocols for students with special needs.
They have however received notices of what the schools have in place.
Samantha does note the schools have been doing their best to ensure schools are as safe environments as possible.
