6th Kate Tone, who attends Scoil Eoin Phóil went to Brussels after winning a schools essay competition
A 6th class student from Leixlip has enjoyed a memorable visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, after winning a schools essay competition run by MEP Nina Carberry.
Kate Tone, who attends Scoil Eoin Phóil, was one of the winners of the Midlands North West competition, which invited 5th and 6th class pupils to answer the question: “If you were an MEP, what would you do to make your community the best place to live for everyone?”
Kate’s thoughtful and imaginative essay earned her the top prize — a trip to Brussels, where she met MEP Carberry and received a guided tour of the European Parliament.
The visit gave Kate a closer look at how EU policies are developed and how decisions made in Brussels can shape everyday life in Ireland.
MEP Carberry praised Kate’s ideas and creativity, and said the competition was a great way to encourage young people to get involved in civic life and learn about democracy in action.
