Kildare town needs a taxi rank.
That's according to Francis Doheny, representing the Newbridge and District Taxi Association.
He has submitted a proposal urging Kildare County Council to establish a taxi rank in the town.
While a rank was established in neighbouring Newbridge, Kildare town saw the removal of three car spaces near the Bank of Ireland in 2016.
According to Mr Doheny, the removal badly impacted local taxi drivers, leaving them with no designated area to operate.
He said the absence of a taxi rank, compounded by recent changes like the discontinuation of the Kildare Village bus service connecting the train station to the shopping centre, hampers tourists' accessibility to local attractions and impacts businesses.
"It's vital for tourists, locals and the town. There's nowhere to get a taxi. It's ridiculous and needs to be sorted once and for all. I've spoken to a number of local political representatives," he said.
He added: "In the last number of years Kildare Village has stopped running a bus from the train station via the town to the shopping centre. Lots of tourists visit the town and would like to visit the Kildare outlet and the Japanese gardens. This is not possible as there is no where for taxis to be available to people."
