Higher Education Minister and Kildare North TD James Lawless has announced a €34 million student support package.
The new measures aim to reduce the cost of college for students through a permanent €150 contribution fee cut, increased SUSI supports and additional assistance for larger families, alongside record apprenticeship funding and a €150 million AI skills package from the National Training Fund.
He made the announcement along with Minister of State for Further Education, Apprenticeship, Construction and Climate Skills, Marian Harkin, has today announced a major Budget 2027 package that will reduce the cost of college for students and families, invest in apprenticeships and skills, and equip Ireland's workforce with the tools needed to succeed in an AI-driven economy.
Under the new student grant measures, families with more than one student in higher education could see their student contribution costs reduced by up to €1,300 per year, while thousands more families will become eligible for support for the first time.
Households with a combined income of up to €150,000 and more than one student in higher education may now qualify for a €500 student contribution grant for each eligible student.
Alongside these measures, Minister Lawless says that Budget 2027 provides "record investment" in apprenticeships, supporting the continued expansion of healthcare education with more than 1,420 annual places through €30 million investment, to support Ireland’s growing workforce demands for the disability, health and education sectors, and delivers the largest capital investment programme in the history of the Department, with €925 million for research, innovation and education infrastructure.
