The South Western Regional Drug & Alcohol Taskforce is reporting a growing trend for its use.
There's a warning about the increased used of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
The substance is used in small quantities in medical and dental settings for pain relief, and in uncontrolled doses, creates a dissociative effect.
Recreational use can cause loss of balance, lung or respiratory damage and death by suffocation.
Steven Joyce is a Development Worker with the Naas-based South Western Regional Drug & Alcohol Taskforce.
Speaking to Kildare Today, he says there's evidence of use in Kildare's recreational areas, such as forests and the Curragh.
