Nationally, public hospitals paid almost €600,000 to debt recovery firms in 2023, more than €500,000 in 2024, and over €278,000 so far this year.
Naas General Hospital paid more than €17,500 to debt collection agencies over the past three years - but the hospital is no longer using private debt collectors and is now handling outstanding charges internally.
Figures released in response to a Parliamentary Question show payments of €15,821 in 2023, €1,660 in 2024, and €22 in 2025, giving a three-year total of €17,503 for Naas General Hospital.
However, it is understood that Naas Hospital has not engaged debt collection agencies in recent years, with its finance team now managing outstanding debts directly, supported by HSE Finance Shared Services.
The €22 recorded for 2025 is linked to a legacy charge from a previous debt collector, rather than new referrals.

The HSE has confirmed it does not centrally record how many patients are referred to debt collectors, citing limitations in its finance systems.
In its response to Kildare North Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly, the HSE says hospitals must collect statutory charges under law, but stresses the process should be carried out in a socially responsible and ethical manner, acknowledging patients may be under financial stress or personal pressure.
Hospitals are encouraged to agree instalment plans where difficulties are identified, with debt collectors only used where no arrangement is in place.
While inpatient and day-care charges were abolished in April 2023, the HSE confirmed that debts incurred before that date remain recoverable, even years later.
