Public engagement played a critical role in shaping the Conservation Management Plan.
Kildare County Council and the Department Of Defence have announced the publication of the Curragh Plains Conservation Management Plan and associated Branding, Interpretation and Wayfinding Strategy.
For the last several years, the Department of Defence has been working, in co-operation with Kildare County Council, on the Curragh Consultancy Project, which has produced the Conservation Management Plan.
The Plan identifies suitable future management methods to allow the various stakeholders on the Curragh to exercise their rights while at the same time allowing public access and encouraging adherence to environmental restrictions.
Public engagement played a critical role in shaping the Conservation Management Plan.
A 2021 online consultation attracted over 3,600 survey responses and 44 written submissions, along with stakeholder meetings, workshops, and interviews.
Commenting on the plan, Tanaiste Micheal Martin said: “I welcome this report on the future of the Curragh Plains. The Curragh is a major natural amenity, not only for locals but for the many tourists who visit Kildare."
He added: This report has laid out the development potential of the area as a high value visitor attraction. It also reflects my commitment to ensuring that The Curragh is protected into the future, while ensuring maximum benefit to the local population and those who visit the Plains.”
Cllr Kevin Duffy, Leas Cathaoirleach of Kildare County Council, highlighted the Curragh’s historical significance, describing it as “a symbol of Ireland’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty.”
