Simon Communities warn the county is becoming ‘locked out’ of the rental market
The Simon Communities of Ireland has warned of a "deepening crisis" in the rental sector, as just 41 properties nationwide were available under the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme last month — with only five in Kildare.
According to its latest Locked Out of the Market report, 10 of 16 areas surveyed had no HAP properties at all, while the majority of available homes were in Dublin.
Kildare was one of just three locations outside the capital to have any listings within HAP limits, alongside Dundalk and Galway city suburbs.
Simon’s Executive Director Ber Grogan said people relying on HAP are being "locked out" of the market, with some facing the choice between emergency accommodation, prolonged homelessness, or unaffordable private rents.
She also criticised the possible removal of Rent Pressure Zones, urging the Government to extend the legislation to prevent further hardship.
