His call came as 16 TDs across FG, FF and the Green Party were not available to discuss the topic on this morning's Kildare Today programme.
Social welfare payments should be standardised for migrants across Europe.
Speaking on Kildare today, Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín emphasised the need to avoid making Ireland an appealing destination for migrants solely based on benefit rates.
His call came as 16 TDs and Senators across FG, FF and the Green Party were not available to discuss the topic on this morning's programme.
In a text message to the show, Kildare North TD James Lawless said: "I hear regular suggestions that the topic of immigration is not being covered but my experience is the opposite. It’s been the single biggest issue I have been dealing with on a constituency basis this past while."
He added: "Also the last several times I have been on the program it has either been the main topic of the piece or else featured heavily in the discussion. The comments afterwards invariably bring it up also. It is an important topic but far from being ignored, it seems to be dominating the discourse, certainly on social media."
However, Toibin believes that a lack of debate on the issue is creating space for extremists to dominate the national conversation.
