Regional Waste Enforcement Authorities Strengthened To Tackle Illegal Dumping

There were no illegal dumping fines issued in Kildare last year.

The Junior Environment Minister hopes stronger enforcement will help to reduce illegal dumping.

The co-ordinating body that works with every local authority across the country has been given stronger enforcement powers to deal with the issue.

Three regional WERLAs - Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities - were set up in 2015, and have been given more resources and powers.

The number of fines issued by Kildare County Council for littering in 2023 doubled compared to 2022.

Figures obtained by Kfm show that 91 fines were issued in 2022 but that increased to 182 last year.

There were no illegal dumping fines issued in 2023.
