Researcher says the media gives a disproportionate amount of air time to far-right voices
The threat of the far-right is over-indulged by the media, according to researchers.
Instances of looting and violent assaults by anti-immigration advocates have gripped the streets of several UK cities this past week, including in Belfast.
Researcher at Maynooth University Dr. Katy Brown says the media gives a disproportionate amount of air time to far-right voices which only give oxygen to violent mobs.
"I think there's almost this kind of morbid fascination with the far right and obviously it is important that we do report on the especially with what we've seen over recent days and months. So it's not to deny that we need to report on them, but sometimes those voices are amplified in the media beyond what their popularity demands."
