The ESB is working towards restoring power to the majority of impacted customers by tonight, but says the damage in South Kerry and West Cork is so extensive, that they may be without power overnight.
Gusts of up to 130 km per hour were recorded in the south of the country this morning, with winds climbing to over 170km per hour off shore at Fastnet Lighthouse in Cork.
The ESB have repaired a number of faults already this morning and are continuing to work to restore power nationwide.
