TUI Says Reform Of Tthe Leaving Cert. To Tackle The Points Race Won't Address The Real Problem.

File image: Rolling News

The TUI wants greater emphasis placed on other modes of post-second level education, such as apprenticeships and traineeships.

The Teachers' Union of Ireland says reform of the Leaving Cert aimed at tackling the points race would be "misdiagnosing the real problem".

Students and teachers' organisations have met with TDs and Senators on changing the Leaving Cert

The TUI is of the view that the “excessive focus” on CAO points is not a product of the Leaving Certificate itself.

The union says its members are opposed to assessing their own students work, and wants the external examiner system in the State Examinations Commission retained.

Futhermore, the union wants greater emphasis placed on other modes of post-second level education, such as apprenticeships and traineeships.

Leixlip native, Michael Gillespie, is General Secretary of the TUI.

He joined Clem Ryan on Thursday's edition of Kildare Today.

Whilst half of Leaving Cert students got their first preference college course, according to a new study.

iReach carried out a survey of sixth year students with 20 percent getting their second preference course for third level.

48 percent of the 1,000 students asked said the Department of Education did a better job with this year's Leaving Cert than last years - both of which were impacted by the pandemic.
