Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision on the M9 in south Kildare after a car travelling the wrong way on the motorway was involved in a head-on crash in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The collision happened at around 3am on the northbound carriageway between Junctions 3 and 4 near Moone and Castledermot.
A BMW was travelling the wrong way on the northbound carriageway when it collided head-on with a Hyundai.
Gardaí have confirmed that a number of people died in the crash.
Four occupants of the Hyundai, two women in their 30s, a woman in her 20s and a child (7), were taken to hospital, with the adults and child receiving treatment for critical and serious injuries.
It's understood they were travelling to Dublin Airport at the time.

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, is also at the scene carrying out an independent investigation.
The watchdog was notified because it is understood the BMW had earlier interaction with gardaí before the collision.
Fiosrú says its involvement does not imply any wrongdoing by gardaí but is required to establish whether any Garda actions or omissions may have contributed to the incident.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who was travelling on the M9 between 2am and 3am and may have dashcam footage, to contact Athy Garda Station.
Investigations are ongoing with the road to remain closed.
